Wadsworth Grizzly pawIt was an impressive performance by the Wadsworth Boys tennis team on Wednesday. The team captured their second straight win, 5-0 over Strongsville. Wadsworth’s three singles players and two doubles teams are undefeated after two matches.

But, the work of team captain and number one singles player, Cameron Croghan made this match memorable. Playing against the number one singles player of the Mustangs. Croghan won the first set 7-6 after winning the tie-breaker 7-2.

In set number two, Croghan was struggling. He was down 2-5 and it looked like a third set was coming. All the other matches were over. His teammates were standing around watching, seeing their post-game snack getting colder by the minute.

But, Tennis Coach Christa Halicki knew better. “Cameron is a great captain. He never gives up. He wants to outlast his opponent”.

And outlast him Cameron did. Croghan won the next five games to capture the second set 7-5 and keep the shutout intact.

Leaving the court, Cameron did the Tiger Woods fist-pump, had a big smile on his face and said, “I did it. I came back from being down 2-5.”

Halicki said, “when your down 2-5, you start by winning one point and then try to string them together. That’s just what Cameron did.”

The next action for the Boys Tennis Team is Monday at home against Highland. Match time is set for 4 p.m.

OTHER GRIZZLY ACTION:

– The Wadsworth baseball team scored only one run on three hits on Wednesday, but that was enough as they defeated Highland 1-0. Right-handed pitcher Chris Byers pitched the seven-hit shutout to get the win. Wadsworth is in action Thursday when they play a single game at Chippewa High School. Wadsworth is 2-0 on the season.

– In Wadsworth girls softball, Highland rallied by scoring once in the sixth and three times in the seventh to defeat Wadsworth 4-3. The game was going Wadsworth’s way thanks to a home run by Cara Crookston in the fourth. The Lady Grizzlies then added two runs in the fifth before disaster struck in the seventh. Softball Coach Michelle DeAngelis believes her team will put the loss behind them. “I have six seniors on the team and they’ve been in this boat before. What do I take away from this game? We need to work on the little things.” Wadsworth is back on the softball diamond Monday when they play at Cloverleaf.
