Wadsworth City Schools are sounding the alarm over a growing concern that could impact future funding, even after their budget was approved this year.

District leaders say a provision in Ohio law allows the Medina County Budget Commission to review, and potentially reduce, school funding, including dollars already approved by local voters.

While Wadsworth’s tax budget was approved earlier this month, other districts in Medina County were not as fortunate, with at least one seeing reductions and others being asked to consider voluntary cuts.

That’s raising concerns locally.

Wadsworth officials say the bigger issue is what this could mean moving forward, especially if a county-level decision could override funding choices made by the community at the ballot box.

In a statement shared through the Educational Service Center of Medina County, school leaders across the county say they’re questioning how decisions are being made, citing a lack of clear criteria, limited communication, and uncertainty about whether the commission has the legal authority to reduce voter-approved funding.

For Wadsworth, those dollars support everyday operations, like staffing, transportation, and student services, and leaders warn any future reductions could have real impacts inside classrooms.

District officials say they’re now working with other Medina County schools to better understand the process and push for transparency, accuracy, and decisions that reflect the needs of students and the will of the community.

A public hearing on the issue is scheduled for March 25 at 2 p.m.
