Nearly 300 young racers from across the United States, Canada and Japan are heading to Akron for the 88th FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby.
The week of events begins Sunday, July 12, with activities leading up to the world championship race at Derby Downs on Saturday, July 18.
Racers between the ages of 7 and 20 qualified by winning local races or earning points through rally competitions. They will compete for a share of $36,000 in college scholarships.
Events throughout the week include preliminary races, a Topside Open House, the National SuperKids Classic and a Vintage Derby Car Show.
Race day begins July 18 with a parade and opening ceremonies at 8 a.m. The first heat starts at 8:30 a.m., with championship races expected to begin around 2 p.m.
Awards will be presented that evening at the Akron Civic Theatre. Advance race-day tickets are $10.
