Wednesday, July 8, is the deadline for those interested in taking the civil service test to become a Wadsworth police officer to submit their applications at the second floor Human Resource Office at Wadsworth City Hall.
There are minimum requirements set by the state of Ohio for those interested in becoming a Wadsworth police officer. “Applicants must be at least 21 years old, but not older than 35. Also, applicants must be a United States citizens, have a high school diploma or equivalent, possess a driver’s license and be insurable,” said Matt Hiscock, safety director for Wadsworth. “Finally, candidates must have a good employment history and a criminal record free of criminal convictions.”
As of Monday, there were 90 applicants signed up to take the test. But, Wadsworth city fficials expect 200 people to sign up. “There’s always a rush to sign up a day or two before the deadline,” said Hiscock.
After the written part of the exam is graded, applicants have to then undergo further testing, including a drug screening, polygraph, psychological and a physical agility test. That’s before a background check is completed by members of the Wadsworth Police Department’s detective bureau.
That’s plenty of work to hire two patrol officers for the Wadsworth Police Department. Currently there are 29 police officers in the Wadsworth Police Department. The addition of two new officers would bring the for to 31, its authorized level of strength.
“Policing has changed in our modern times,” said Hiscock. “We need smart officers out there, officers that are able to analyze situations, keep cool and calm in stressful situations and make good decisions in the end.”
The test will be given July 16 at the Northside Christian Church on Ridge Road at 6 p.m.
