baseballIt was an important win for the Wadsworth Varsity Baseball team.

Wadsworth defeated Copley 8-4 Thursday afternoon. The game featured the leaders in the American and National Conference in the Suburban League. Plus, in the upcoming State Baseball Tournament, Wadsworth is seeded first and Copley is seeded second in the Barberton District.

The game was tied at four runs apiece at the end of the fifth inning when the Grizzlies kicked their offense into high gear.

Wadsworth scored one run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to earn their 18th victory of the season against five losses. Copley falls to 13-4.

A single by junior third basemen Jacob Kries scored junior centerfielder A.J. Robinson with the go-ahead run. In the game, Kries went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Robinson drew two bases on balls, scored two runs and drove in one.

On the afternoon, Wadsworth’s offense registered 12 hits. Cam Deemer had two hits (single, double), two runs scored and a run batted in. Senior pitcher Chris Byers helped his own cause by going 2-for-4.

While it wasn’t the prettiest of games, Byers battled his way to a complete game victory to improve his record on the mound to 5 wins and 1 loss.

the State Tournament for both clubs starts next week. With an 11-3 mark in the Suburban League’s National Conference, Wadsworth has at least a first-place tie.
