DON Curly MOYERThe Wadsworth Lady Grizzly Basketball Team played before their largest crowd ever Saturday night at Value City Arena. And they brought the State Title back home, after defeating Mason, for the first time since 1997.

But the weekend’s joy was tempered a bit for some in the community. Don “Curly” Moyer, one of the team’s No. 1 fans, never missed a game. He rode the bus Friday night to Columbus to see the tournament action and cheer on the team.

Don didn’t feel well enough on Saturday to get back on the bus and go to the game, so he watched it from home. As soon as the buzzer sounded, and the Wadsworth Lady Grizzlies won the State Championship, Don suffered a heart attack and died en route to the hospital.

“I never met Mr. Moyer personally, but I do know that Jerry (another big fan that has passed) and he were faithful followers,” said Lady Grizzlies head basketball coach Andrew Booth. “They were always there early — and usually at the top of the stands cheering on the team. It is definitely a sad day for Grizzly Nation, as Mr. Moyer will be sorely missed among the Sea of Red supporters. Our team’s thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”

The community says Don, who was a Wadsworth High School grad and Eagles member, was at every Wadsworth game supporting the kids for as long as anyone can remember. His positive support will be missed.
