medical record, chartAccording to a new report by iSheriff, close to 45 percent of Americans have had their health information compromised because of a cyber attack. And over five years, there has been over 143 million patients’ records compromised.

And sadly, according to the report, many health organizations don’t even realize how bad the problem is. The Health Information Management Society’s 2015 Cybersecurity Survey reveals that 64 percent of healthcare organizations have experienced some sort of cyber attack in the past 12 months, while “Bloomberg” puts that number at 90 percent over the past two years. In fact, more data breaches happen in the medical and healthcare industry than any other sector, with the Identity Theft Resource Center saying that medical and healthcare made up 46 percent of reported breaches last year.

And while you may not think this is as bad as having your credit card stolen, you’d be wrong. Should someone try to get care using your medical identity, it could be integrated into your medical records, and result in possible inaccurate diagnosis somewhere down the line.
