5 sun protective foodsClean eating on a budget may sound like an oxymoron, but it is possible. In her book, “Unprocessed,” food writer Megan Kimble documented the year she spent avoiding all processed foods.

Here are some takeaways from Megan’s journey into “clean eating” – she accomplished this feat while living on a salary under $20,000:

  • Read the label on everything you buy – You can easily make salad dressings and condiments at home (seriously kids – a little lemon juice, some olive oil…a little salt, pepper and dijon – BOOM!).
  • Pick up single-ingredient foods – Buying products with only one ingredient (like milk, oats, honey, and fruit) is the simplest way to avoid preservatives and other additives
  • Create versions of your favorite unprocessed treats – Instead of buying cookies and candies, opt for fruit and yummy home made desserts
  • Prepare food in bulk – This saves money and time, and ensures you have unprocessed options at the ready

Most of all, try to enjoy yourself as you experiment with new foods! Be inventive and use seasoning. Processed foods cost more money, and even though you’ll spend more time in the kitchen preparing your own foods naturally, it’s worth it.
