dog itchingFlea and tick season is well upon us in northeast Ohio. Dr. Dane Arends with Wadsworth Veterinary Hospital says this tick season is nasty. All four types are being seen here.

The best defense against the ticks seems to be the Seresto dog collars.

“There’s no residue, nothing transfered to your child as long as they aren’t holding onto it for a long period of time,” Dr. Arends explained. “The collars have to be put on snug, where you can fit one or two fingers underneath it. It has to contact the skin and these little microbeads of the drug can slowly get into the animal’s bloodstream over time.”

After being outside for 15 minutes in tall grass or a park, Dr. Arends suggests checking your pets and yourself for ticks.

You could also ask a lawn service for a pet safe tree lawn application that can get rid of fleas and ticks in your yard.

Dr. Arends reminds pet owners to routinely give your animals the proper dose of flea/tick/heartworm medication.
